  • Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh on Monday activated a public telephone system on Mumbai’s city buses. Passengers can now make calls from these telephones installed on the BEST buses. Apart from the telephones, the buses will now sport closed circuit cameras for extra security. Also, a new automated fare collection system has been activated. All that the passenger has to do is to hold the ’smart card’ in front of a reader on the bus and the reader will deduct the fare.

A top Russian scientist has warned that the earth will experience ‘global cooling’ in next 50 years, followed by a period of global warming in the early 22nd century.

“On the basis of our solar emission research, we have developed a scenario of global cooling of the earth’s climate by the middle of this century and the beginning of a regular 200-year-long cycle of global warming at the start of the 22nd century,” said Dr Habibullo Abdusamatov, the head of the space research sector of the Russian Academy of Sciences’ astronomical observatory.

Abdusamatov said he and his colleagues had concluded that a period of global cooling similar to one seen in the late 17th century - when canals froze in the Netherlands and people had to leave their dwellings in Greenland - could start in 2012-2015 and reach its peak in 2055-2060.

Environmentalists and scientists today focus on the dangers of global warming provoked by man’s detrimental effect on the planet’s climate, but global cooling - though never widely supported - is a theory postulating an overwhelming cooling of the Earth which could involve glaciations.

Abdusamatov said such climate change will have serious consequences and that authorities should start preparing for them because “climate cooling is connected with changing temperatures, especially for northern countries.”

“The Kyoto initiatives to save the planet from the greenhouse effect should be put off until better times,” he was quoted as saying by RIA Novosti.

He said that the global temperature maximum has been reached on the Earth and it will decline to a climatic minimum even without the Kyoto protocol on cutting greenhouse gas emissions.

  • Man comes to court drunk on DUI charge

A man who showed up in court drunk to be sentenced for drunken driving told the judge he routinely drinks 12 beers a day “and then some.”

Carbon County President Judge Roger Nanovic sentenced 25-year-old Joshua Beury yesterday to 30 days to six months in prison for contempt of court and the second-offense DUI charge.

Beury received a similar sentence on Monday for charges related to a November 6th crash which his blood-alcohol level registered 0.17, about twice the legal limit.

Beury told Nanovic he’d had two beers the night before the hearing, when his blood alcohol registered .20. He said he was on medication for bipolar disorder and other mental health issues.

  • Astronomers meeting in the Czech capital have voted to strip Pluto of its status as a planet. About 2,500 experts were in Prague for the International Astronomical Union’s (IAU) general assembly.

Astronomers rejected a proposal that would have retained Pluto as a planet and brought three other objects into the cosmic club.

Pluto has been considered a planet since its discovery in 1930 by the American Clyde Tombaugh.

The vote effectively means the ninth planet will now be airbrushed out of school and university textbooks.

The decision was made at a meeting of the International Astronomical Union (IAU) in the Czech capital Prague.

“The eight planets are Mercury, Earth, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune,” said the IAU resolution, which was passed following a week of stormy debate.

    PLUTO - A ‘DEMOTED PLANET’
Artist impression of New Horizons spacecraft passing by Pluto
    Named after underworld god
Average of 5.9bn km to Sun
    Orbits Sun every 248 years
    Diameter of 2,360km
    Has at least three moons
    Rotates every 6.8 days
    Gravity about 6% of Earth’s
    Surface temperature -233C
    Nasa probe visits in 2015

The IAU’s proposal to raise the number of planets in the Solar System to 12, adding the asteroid Ceres, Pluto’s “moon” Charon and the distant object known as 2003 UB313, met with opposition.

Pluto’s status has been contested for many years as it is further away and considerably smaller than the eight other planets in our Solar System.

Since the early 1990s, astronomers have found several other objects of comparable size to Pluto in an outer region of the Solar System called the Kuiper Belt.

Some astronomers believe Pluto belongs with this population of small, icy “Trans-Neptunians”, not with the objects we call planets.

Allowances were once made for Pluto on account of its size. At just 2,360km (1,467 miles) across, Pluto is significantly smaller than the other planets. But until recently, it was still the biggest known object in the Kuiper Belt.

That changed with the discovery of 2003 UB313 by Professor Mike Brown and colleagues at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech). After being measured with the Hubble Space Telescope, it was shown to be some 3,000km (1,864 miles) in diameter, making it larger than the ninth planet.

Named after the god of the underworld in Roman mythology, it orbits the Sun at an average distance of 5.9 billion kilometres (3.7 billion miles) taking 247.9 Earth years to complete a single circuit of the Sun.

An unmanned US spacecraft, New Horizons, is due to fly by Pluto and the Kuiper Belt in 2015.

  • Ohh Well,

What to write :|. It’s that same freeegin beech I had talked about in “This post”. Well, due to some reason, I hadn’t studied well, in the first “Monday Test” of the third year and hence secured just 2 Marks out of 15.

  • Well,

Its that day of the week I wish never came !

Why ? Well, we, in our college, have 8 continuous lectures. YES! 8 Continuous Lectures :( To top to that, we have something called the “Monday Test” of 15 Marks. 15 Marks makes it look like Who Cares. But No.. These friggin marks are counted for the year-end “Internals” that are submitted to the Board :(

The test is the first torture that we go through on a Monday. Just after that, are the 7 gruelling hours of (boring) lectures [ minus 30 minutes of recess ]. Man, I’m like (:| most of the time. No wait, well, everybody is :P

And well, according to the title, I say it’s gonna be worse this time because my cuzin 54!\!!>Y is returning from U.S ( With lots of stuff for me. Woohoo ) So I have to goto the airport for him which is like @ 1 A.M . And thus, most of the night will be spent exploring his stuff :p

So no sleep the whole night and then Monday the next day makes Preshit and Almost dead man.

Plus, i have to go find a friggin external project guide since our ( 5T!_!P1!> ) project guide says she doesnt know anything abt GPS ( friggin beeech )

So I dunno how long will that take.

So if I dont return to blog 2mrw, pray I m not dead by all the torture above :|

    Signed-

  • In Need of Sponsors…

    Well,

Ya’ll must be already knowing that I’m in my Final Year of Diploma in Computer Engineering.

We are supposed to work on this project, “GPS based Vehicle Tracking System”.

Our “Project Guide” ( L-) on Y! M ) has told us to Look for an External Guide, which now is gonna be a tough task.

Also, we need to find sponsors for our Project. Yeh, someone or some organisation who could sponsor our project “financially”.

So, if you are reading this, and you know anyone who is anyhow related to “GPS” or “Vehicles” or “whatever”, do let me know please.

I hope we start the work on the project soon.

  • My new Online Project

    Well,

I have started work on a new Online Project. I’ll be coming up with a site for Engineers. It will be an online community where engineers could interact with others and have a good time.

I can’t disclose any other details right now. Though I promise a Beta will be out soon, once I buy the domain.

    Wish me Luck :)
